A few words from my studio in Denver.
I’m an art junkie! My desktop is bogged down and my USBs are packed with paintings and drawings I’ve downloaded from the internet. I like to look at art almost as much as I like making it.
Everything that people have carved or molded or painted from the Paleolithic to the modern era appeals to me. I guess I decided I wanted to be an artist because I was so enthusiastic about studying it and I wanted to be able to decipher the secrets of artistic expression. That’s the genesis of my obsession. Breaking the code isn’t so easy, but it’s fun.
I earned a BFA from Indiana State University. I’ve also studied at the Art Institute in New York for a couple of years. I have had solo shows and been in group exhibits as well as sold art online over the years, I’ve also done a lot of graphic illustration. I took a little break from commerce and now I’m back.
My creative process involves making dozens of small thumbnail drawings as a foundation for the paintings. These drawings establish the compositional framework of the paintings. The paintings themselves evolve as I apply colors and values to the canvas.
Working in oils on canvas, I use the rich tones and translucence that this medium makes possible. The entire process from start to finish entails changes and choices that always result in something new and unexpected, which frequently bears no resemblance to the original drawing that launched the painting.
The abstractions that the process produces are usually informed by the things that inspire my imagination. I think the myriad forms of plants and flowers are especially interesting.
The truth is, the outcome is never fully anticipated. I might paint a cubist still life, a landscape, or a geometric design as my mood dictates and that kind of experimentation brings me personal satisfaction. I hope you enjoy.
