Doodle Daily

Blog #3- 10/27/22

I think it’s important to develop a regular drawing and/or painting practice. This is advice that I don’t follow very consistently myself so I’ve decided to post daily “doodles” on my instagram account as a way to hold myself accountable. I’m not going to be able to spend a lot of time on this every day, so some of these sketches are going to be things I’ve done in the recent past but it will become a habit of mine in due course.

What is a doodle anyway? I’m not sure what distinguishes a doodle from a drawing or a drawing from a painting. They all blend together without any clear line of demarcation. Is a pastel sketch a drawing rather than a painting simply because it has less linseed oil (or other binding medium) than a tube of paint? I don’t fret too much about these distinctions. I just think it’s important for a visual artist to elicit imagery and stimulate the imagination by scribbling without worrying about the quality of those scribbles. It’s a great way to come up with ideas for more elaborate work and it’s good therapy whether you call yourself an artist or not.
